Training Diary, Volume 2: 7/26/2003

Miles this week: 123; Miles to date: 406

Fundraising has picked up a bit this week and I received a bunch more donations - thanks to all of you for your generosity. It constantly amazes me.

This week was a relatively slow commuting week - I rode in Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, but because of plans I had after work, I didn't ride Thursday or Friday. I was glad I missed out on Thursday because there was a massive thunderstorm and I wouldn't have wanted to bike home in that!

Saturday - Three Covered Bridges (47 miles)

After a late night on Friday, I woke up too early to meet for that day's ride. A good amount of people showed up for this ride, despite the overcast skies and gloomy forecast. We started off and right from the beginning we were hit with insane headwinds. It was all I could do to go 15 mph when I would normally go 18 on this route. It was a struggle, but we saw lots of sights that made it worthwhile.

Apparently, this was the weekend of the yardsale in Frederick, MD. Tons of people were out selling stuff in their yards and driveways. My favorites were the kids: there was one girl dressed up in a sequined clown costume with pom-poms who ended up cheering us as we went by. Another couple of girls were selling lemonade and waved to us. That was fun.

But my absolute favorite thing we saw this weekend was at the 2nd pit stop. It was a 7-11/gas station and this group of motorcyclists came up and one of them had a side car for his dog! The dog was so cute with his "doggles" and looked so happy to have the wind rushing through his ears.

The wind stayed with us for most of the day, but the last 7 miles were heaven - either slightly downhill or with a tailwind. I ended up averaging about 16 mph.

Sunday - final stage of the Tour de France

I decided it was too important and historic an event, so I stayed home to watch the final stage of the Tour de France and to see Lance take 6 consecutive wins. It was amazing to see and I cried at the end (big baby that I am). What an accomplishment, what a story, and how proud am I to say that I'm a cyclist too.

Hope you all had a good week and enjoy this pictures!
